Can you give an overview of your background and marketing experience?
Since 2008, I have had the privilege of teaching a variety of marketing courses in the UIC College of Business. Currently, I hold the position of Senior Marketing Lecturer, where I focus on equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the field of marketing.
Before transitioning to academia, I acquired invaluable experience in sales and marketing, working for Fortune 200 firms. Most of my roles required leading project teams, conducting market research, analyzing consumer data, and developing marketing strategies. Throughout my career, I had the opportunity to manage some of the most recognizable brands in the marketplace, including Glade, Kraft, Pillsbury, American Express, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool.
In your opinion, what professionals would benefit from pursuing an MS in Marketing degree?
An MS in Marketing degree has mass appeal to anyone interested in marketing. The flexibility and convenience of the online program is ideal for working professionals that are interested in excelling in a specific area of marketing to advance in their career. For example, we offer courses in marketing management, digital marketing, and consumer behavior. The program could also be perfect for recent college graduates or even someone looking to make a career switch.
How do you stay informed about the latest developments and best practices in marketing and how do you integrate this knowledge into your teaching?
I structure my courses based on the necessary marketing skillsets students will need to be competitive in corporate roles. Given the nature of my professional background and experience, I ensure my students are challenged with learning-based activities and assignments that assess their creativity, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
The challenge is that marketing trends continue to change at a rapid pace. That said, continuing to sharpen my saw is of the utmost importance and is ongoing for me. I frequently read blogs, journals, and books related to marketing and business. I have also added podcasts and various videos to my personal library.
Every year, I generally will enroll in courses as well. A few years ago, I earned marketing certifications from the University of Georgia and DePaul University. I am an active member of various associations including The American Marketing Association (AMA). I enjoy taking AMA courses and participating in their marketing conferences.
Every year, I prioritize attending the annual FSI conference at UIUC (Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning). The workshops and presentations are very helpful in learning new technologies related to teaching and instruction.
What advice would you offer to prospective students who are considering enrolling in the online MS in Marketing program at UIC?
The online MS in Marketing program is accelerated. It is important for students to engage early in the semester and stay focused. Frequent communication with professors is imperative, especially given the asynchronous modality. Additionally, actively participating in online discussions and networking with fellow students can enrich the learning experience and expand their professional network.
What is the most important thing you have learned about having a successful career that you would like to pass on to people considering this field?
Networking with peers and developing a personal brand should be top priorities when building your career. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of having a mentor and advocate at least two levels above your current position. For instance, every manager should have a V.P. as an advocate. Networking outside the firm is also helpful too. Platforms like LinkedIn are perfect for making professional connections both within and outside your organization.
